Tar sands consist of oil trapped in a complex mixture of sand, water and clay. The extraction and production of tar sands emits on average three times as much carbon dioxide as the extraction and production of conventional oil.

The Co-operative Bank, Insurance and Investments has announced it is backing a legal action by the Beaver Lake Cree Nation to stop expansion of ecologically disastrous tar sand developments in Alberta, Canada.
